(More customer reviews)Backstory: I am a new ballroom dance, and I love tango and the latin dance. I quickly came to realize that I needed a faster shoe for the sake of my knees. So I went to a local dance store that had little to no selection and left empty-handed. So I came to the internet, approximate size in hand to find a "reasonable" shoe for lessons and practice. In the process, I have purchased three shoes--the Capezio Women's Piccadilly Character Shoe(wrong sole, incredibly bad fit--a BIG no), the So Danca CH57 2.5, and a "Mercedes-class" Verner Kern closed toe.Two are going back to the store-- I am keeping the Verner Kern.
The So Danca shoe is a decent dance shoe. (The picture is prettier than the shoe, itself.) It has suede shoes, quick-release buckles and decent arch support. Foot padding is very good. Its leather is comparable to Capezios--somewhat soft with a dull finish. It has elastic to ensure a snug fit at the toe AND elastic on the ankle-straps, which could be a weakness with age. Also the buckle is friction based and doesn't have holes.
The primary reason for sending them back is the toe box/shoe ratio. I have relatively short, squared toes, so I often purchase a slightly larger 9.5B or 9.0W depending on the cut of the toe box. I ordered a 10W So Danca CH57 based on my experience at thefirst shoe store. Unfortunately, the toe box is still too short, with my toes bumping the end of the shoe when standing (need a bigger shoe). However, my heel rises when moving, indicating the length is too long (need a smaller shoe). The elastic on the ankle strap has too much give to help me. I felt cramped and unstable. Conclusion-- need a different shoe.
The difference between it and the Verner Kern? Kern is much softer leather, finer stitching and different suede nap on the soles, holes to support quick release snap, longer toe box...ended up with a 7.5B British shoe (10B). And it is gorgeous. It should be at twice the price. I bought it in a different dance store 60 miles away, but it was worth the trip.I tried on 20 pairs across different brands/styles/sizes before settling on my final purchase. Each style, even within the same brand, fits slightly differently. The difference in cost between online and brick and mortar evened out with the cost of shipping and returning.
